10 rules for good political media
Greg Pinelo with GMMB recently shared some great advice at a Campaigns and Elections Magazine seminar. With Brad Chism as scribe, and apologies to Greg for any misstatements, here are the ten rules: 1. It’s about the Voters, Not the Candidate. Candidates must connect on topics that resonate with voters. 2. Heart Trumps Head. Emotion triumphs over reason almost every time. 3. Play to Your Candidate’s Strengths. If he’s great on the stump, feature those candid moments. 4. Less Is More. Remember the limited attention span of the voter. 5. If on the Atttack, Do It Different Early. You have about 5 seconds at the outset before they tune you out. The same old opening lines will get old. 6. Production Quality Matters. 7. Speed Kills Rapid response is essential in today’s campaign world. 8. No Cookie Cutters. What worked two states over isn’t likely to work here. 9. Tailor And Target. With today’s microtargeting, you can produce and run spots to a very narrow sliver of the overall TV audience. 10. Words Are Overrated. Visual and auditory imagery move voters more.
